"Ground water resources of Iraq"
I am a hydrogeologist. I have 25 years experience in management and implementation of various hydrogeological projects In Iraq. I can say that I worked in nearly every square km of Iraqi territory.
Supervision of field works, analysis and interpretation of available and acquired data and publishing of final reports were all included in my assignment. In the present time I am working as a hydrogeology and GIS consultant at SwedPower Sweden.

Can you direct me to some large springs from which water can be abstracted for bottling purposes. We are working with a group in Iraq interested in setting up a bottled water facility. Security is, of course, a concern. Email me directly at wturner@waterbank.com

Dr. Alsam;

I am an employee of Sandia National Laboratories. My current work is an independent study of potential health effects of depleted uranium on Iraqi civilians during the 1991 Gulf War. As part of this study I am trying to get a better understanding of the water sources and usage in the battle zones and their ability to transport uranium to human water supplies, crops, and livestock. I would be most appreciative if you can give me some guidance on this topic.

Sincerely,

Albert C. Marshall

Dear Mr. Alsam,

I believe that your detailed work also included the territory of the Northern Governorates of Iraq, but during our 3-years work in that part of the country for the Food and Agricultural Organization of UN (Water Resources and Irrigation Programme), we had no access to any reliable data concerning hydrogeology. However, through implementation of a very large scale programme that involved local staff and only a few internationals, lot of important data were collected and evaluated. The work included geological and hydrogeological mapping, geophysical survey, remote sensing applications & GIS, GW network, eventually drilling of some 500 deep wells that have a potential of about 3,000 l/s that can be pumped in a sustainable manner. Two books of "Hydrogeology of Northern Iraq", first written by Stevanovic & Markovic (Regional Geology), and second by Stevanovic & Iurkiewicz (Aquifer Systems) should be published very soon by TCES FAO Rome. For those interested in practical projects implementation in this part of Iraq, that could be a very good base.
