"2004 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting"
AGU and the 19 cosponsoring societies cordially invite you to submit
abstracts for the 2004 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting, 16-20 August,
Honolulu, Hawaii. You have until 5 May to submit via the web at
http://submissions3.agu.org/submission/entrance.asp

The 2004 WPGM will have a range of scientific sessions focusing on
multidisciplinary problems -- many with a clear link to phenomena in the
Pacific Rim and elsewhere in the region.

Here is just a sampling of the exciting science that will be presented in
Hawaii:

Interdisciplinary hydrology sessions explore the hydrology of volcanoes in
the Pacific Rim, hydrologic studies of the atmosphere-land-ocean
boundaries and fluxes including the biological component, and both surface
and subsurface hydrologic responses to land cover changes in tropical
systems. Other hydrology sessions include remote sensing, data
assimilation and land surface modeling, and quantifying uncertainty in
subsurface hydrology.

Tropical cyclone research and forecasts, long-range transport of air
pollutants, and solar activity forcing of southern tropospheric
oscillation combine atmospheric sciences, biogeosciences, and space
physics.

Crustal deformation in Asia, links geodesy, tectonophysics, and
seismology. Other solid Earth sessions treat ocean arc volcanism, and
large igneous provinces in the Pacific Basin. Hydrology of volcanoes in
the Pacific Rim also integrates several disciplines.

Ocean sciences are rich with interdisciplinary sessions including
decadal variability in the North Pacific, Southern Hemisphere climate
variability, and seafloor mapping in the Pacific.

The application of science to society is highlighted in sessions on
hazards in the region, including non-earthquake triggered tsunamis.

While the meeting focuses on topics of interest in the western Pacific
region, abstract submissions will be accepted for any topic relating to
the geophysical sciences. These topics can include:

Atmospheric Sciences
Biogeosciences
Geodesy
Hydrology
Geomagnetism & Paleomagnetism
Ocean Sciences
Planetary Sciences
Seismology
Solar-Planetary & Aeronomy
Tectonophysics
Volcanology

Contributed papers on all topics related to the geophysical sciences are
encouraged. Abstracts may be submitted electronically until 5 May 2004 at
23:59 UT.

There is no abstract fee for scientists who are residents in countries
classified by the World Bank as “low income” or “lower middle income.” The
list of countries and special instructions for abstract submission are on
the WPGM web site at
http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp04/Berkner_countries_abstracts.html

Should you have questions about the meeting or abstract submission send an
email to service@agu.org or telephone AGU at 1 202.462.6900. Visit the
WPGM web site at http://www.agu.org/meetings/wp04/
