Wessex Institute is delighted to announce two new initiatives in 2004: The Prigogine Awards, which will reward both a senior researcher and a young researcher for their outstanding work on the topic of ecological systems; and the Young Researcher Scholarships, which will allow a number of young researchers the opportunity to present their work at a Wessex Institute Conference and have it published in the associated proceedings.

PRIGOGINE AWARDS - CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
=========================================
Two special medals and prizes have been instituted by the University of Siena and the Wessex Institute of Technology (WIT). The Bank Monte Dei Paschi di Siena, is providing sponsorship to support these important initiatives.
The prizes will be awarded annually for the best papers presented at a relevant WIT conference on the topic of ecological systems. Each award consists of a gold medal and a cash prize of E5000. The medal has been specially commissioned from a group of goldsmiths who use the same techniques as the ancient Etruscans. It features the name of Prigogine and the symbol for bifurcation, to represent his distinctive work on ecodynamics.
2004 LAUNCH
These awards will be launched this year at the Aula Magna, University of Siena, on Wednesday 16 June 2004. This event will mark the inauguration of the Third International Conference on Urban Regeneration and Sustainability (Siena, 14 - 16 June 2004: http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2004/sustainablecity04/index.html)
and includes a joint session with the Second International Conference on Prevention, Assessment, Rehabilitation and Development of Brownfield Sites (Siena, 16 -18 June 2004: http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2004/brownfields04/index.html
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The first medal and prize will be awarded to a Senior Researcher, nominated in advance by the Committee and invited to give the keynote address at the conference. The second prize will be given to a Young Researcher, under forty years of age. Such researchers participating in either of the two international conferences listed above are welcome to apply for the Young Researcher's Prize, enclosing a completed application form (see: http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2004/sustainablecity04/index.html), a CV and a copy of their abstract or paper.

YOUNG RESEARCHER SCHOLARSHIPS

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is sponsoring the Design & Nature conference and as a result funds are now available for a number of scholarships to enable young researchers to present a paper at the meeting.
The scholarships are open to young researchers (under the age of 40) whose paper has been accepted for presentation at the Design & Nature
conference (Rhodes, 28 - 30 June 2004: http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2004/design04/index.html) and who have registered to attend the meeting. Each scholarship will be US$500 and will be given at the time of conference registration.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Please submit applications as soon as possible (form available at: http://www.wessex.ac.uk/conferences/2004/design04/index.html) to the Conference Secretariat, along with a short CV and your abstract.
It is advisable to apply for a scholarship as soon as possible as there is a limited number available. Successful applicants will be promptly notified of their award.
