In 2000 the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) initiated a global project on “Water and Land-Use”. The project operates primarily in Southeast Asia and East Africa, and is looking to expand in the coming years. In East Africa, the major activity of the project is “Improved land management on the Lake Victoria Basin”, in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with financing from the Swedish International Development Agency. In SE Asia, current research in Thailand and Indonesia is focused on soil and water conservation functions of vegetation in the landscape, and is funded by several donors.The Position:
ICRAF is seeking a senior scientist to lead this global project and oversee the expansion of this research area. Reporting to the Leader of ICRAF’s Ecosystem Processes and Management Programme, the Hydrologist will be expected to perform the following tasks:
· Lead the global project on Water and Land-use and oversee the expansion of this research area globally.
· Cultivate relationships with the donor community and mobilize resources to fund activities of this project
· Conduct cutting-edge research that contributes to interdisciplinary analyses of watershed function and changes in these functions, in relation to land-use changes in selected wetlands, riverine areas and forest margins
· Lead the efforts of the Ecosystem Processes and Management programme in the Lake Victoria basin project
The Successful Candidate will:
· have a PhD degree or equivalent with specialisation in hydrology, watershed management, forestry, or another relevant field.
· have strong donor relation and fund raising skills.
· have strong publication record.
· have at least 6 years of experience post PhD conducting research on environmental or land management issues in the tropics.
· be comfortable working at a variety of scales ranging from plot (10m) to watershed (10Km2)
· have strong conceptualisation and analytical skills
Terms of Offer:
ICRAF offers an internationally competitive salary and benefits package, and a collegial and gender-sensitive working environment. The contract is for continuing appointment up to 10 years, subject to a 1-year probation period, annual assessment of performance, continued relevance of the position and availability of resources.
