"RESEARCH SCIENTIST - ALCOA WORLD ALUMINA AUSTRALIA"
Alcoa is a major producer of alumina and aluminium and Australia’s sixth largest resource sector exporter. We are an integrated business comprised of bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, rolling and can sheet products, with operations in Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

As part of an experienced team of scientists you will study the development of rehabilitated mined lands towards achieving sustainable forest land uses. You will be a major contributor to a project to assess the effects of mining and rehabilitation on the hydrology of the forest catchments mined for bauxite. As a PhD or experienced graduate with expertise in hydrology or plant and soil water relations you will play a pivotal role in this long-term research program.

The Role:
• Contributes innovative ideas to the ongoing development of the hydrological research program and evaluates its various components to ensure achievement of long-term project milestones. Regularly reviews the progress of projects within the program and adjust priorities where appropriate.
• Contributes at a professional level, to the planning, design, implementation and reporting of studies into forest hydrological processes in conjunction with external organisations such as CALM, universities and Department of Environment.
• Jointly supervises research projects being undertaken by students, consultants and research scientists from other research organisations.
• Provides effective technical and operational liaison with personnel from the Department of Environment, Water Corporation, CALM, CSIRO, universities and other research organisations.
• Provides effective technical and operational liaison with mine personnel to improve the management of current and future mine and rehabilitation operations.
• Contributes to the development, evaluation and application of numerical simulation models developed for the hydrological program.

This position is based at our corporate office in Booragoon.

The Person: This position is regarded as pivotal in meeting Alcoa’s long-term business plans so the person needs to show a high level of personal initiative and be highly motivated to drive the projects to reach successful outcomes. The person needs to demonstrate well developed team skills that will enhance the effectiveness of the internal teams and help build strong teams with external research organisations.

A tertiary qualification and professional experience in Forestry, Agriculture, Environmental Science or associated discipline are essential. A PhD with experience in industry is desirable. Particular expertise being sought includes detailed knowledge of hydrological processes or plant and soil water relations. Experience with hydrological modelling is desirable. Superior scientific writing and statistical abilities are essential. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and good problem solving techniques are required.
