"Groundwater Modeling Software"
I am trying to decide between using GMS, Visual MODFLOW or GW Vistas for a groundwater modeling project involving flow and transport (using RT3D). A nice automated calibration tool would be very useful.

My criterion for choosing the most appropriate package are:

(1) Price
(2) Reliability
(3) Easy-of-use

Any suggestions / experience / comments would be appreciated.

I don't use any of the 3 packages you mention, but I know people who are not happy with the technical response on Visual Modflow, but are happy with Vistas. Auto calibration - the best one around is PEST - refer to John Doherty's home page - www.ozemail.com.au/~wnc/. Pest is compatible with Vistas, and probably with the others as well.

2. "GW modeling software"
My experience is that GW Vistas is the most user friendly. It has everything you need to get into big trouble really fast ;)

I have used GW Vistas since it was ModelCAD and have found that it does almost everything I need. The biggest drawback include documentation of new features (The software is updated frequently online). The great majority of the preprocessor is well documented in the manual and update are available online. You will need additional software however. Surfer, by Golden Software, is almost a requirement and makes model construction a lot easier

A big plus is support. Jim Rumbaugh is very approachable and will provide considerable help. Overall, I would say that this is the best value.
