"Introduction to groundwater modelling"
I would like to become familiar with the basics of groundwater modelling. There are so many books and softwares on this topic that I don't know where to start. I have fair knowledge of hydrogeological principles. Can you help me identify valuable written resources for beginners ?

Can you tell me a little about your background so we can figure out where to start?

I have a bachelor degree in geology(86) and a master degree in hydrogeology(93) but I concentrated on field techniques for aquifer parameter measurements. I have been involved in numerous environmental site assessment and remediation projects but very few of them incuded complex hydrogeological investigations.

I know almost nothing about groundwater modeling : how to select a proper software for a given problem, how to make sure that the results will make any sense.

I am also looking for good reference books on the math needed for modeling (integral calculus is buried deep into my memory and I don't know nothing about the finite difference method.

Thanks

One of the best text books I know of is

"Applied Ground Water Modeling: Simulation of Flow and Advective Transport" by Anderson, M.D. and Woessner, W. 1992, Academic Press Inc., San Diego, CA

I believe they have an updated version of this book, by I don't have the reference. Either way, you can't go wrong if you are looking for a good book to introduce yourself to the basic concepts of groundwater modeling. They do an excellent job of covering the the theory (math) and practical aspects of modeling.

The National Ground Water Association also has some well respected courses for groundwater modeling (www.ngwa.com).

Hope this helps.
